Take a look at the Kel-Tec PF9 as well. In a small pistol, it's the most value-for-money gun out there right now, and doesn't come in a mouse-gun caliber. Better yet, a .22LR conversion kit for it is about to hit the market, so training will become a lot cheaper.
ReplyDeleteI'll eventually get rid of my P-3AT for something else. It runs fine since I replaced the extractor, so reliability's no longer a factor. The problem is that I can't keep two fingers on it while shooting, so I have to hold it with only my middle finger. When shooting one-handed, this effectively duplicates a limp-wrist condition, because the gun pivots around the one finger under recoil.
ReplyDeleteA couple of the other pocket 380s out there (Kahr P380 and Sig P238) have just enough length for me to get a solid, two-finger grip. One of those will be the likely replacement.
That new Sig looks really nice, but it's getting a touch on the big side for pocket carry for me. I used to pocket carry a Kel-Tec P-11, which has similar dimensions to the Sig, and it was chunky in the pocket. Not saying it can't be done, just that it's chunky. I'm looking forward to the inevitable "P-3AT/P290 photo comparison" threads.
If you want an idea of how it'll ride in a pocket, go look at a Kahr PM9. Dimensions between the two are very close. If the P290 can come in at closer to five bills, instead of the Kahr's six to seven, Sig stands to make quite a few sales.
Take a hard look at the Taurus SLIM, too.
